Finding Power from the Pelvis

Where’s the most powerful part of your body? Where do you think of when I ask that question?
The brain is the Command Centre. It’s what does all the decision making, both conscious and unconscious.
But the motor centre, the area attached to the biggest muscles (of your back, belly, bottom and legs) is your Pelvis.

There’s a Feldenkrais in-joke, that whatever the question is, the answer’s your pelvis. For this reason, it’s where our power and balance comes from. It’s why its of crucial importance in Judo and other martial arts. It’s also the counter-lever to the head.

Babies can’t roll over until three areas are over their midline. It’s not to do with muscle power, but organisation of yourself. The head, shoulders and the pelvis have to move for a person to get from the back to the side, without having to use power. Babies don’t have much muscle, but can still move around successfully. So can we! Try it out yourself.

In order for the pelvis to contribute, the back and stomach muscles have to be balanced. And by that I mean able to contract or elongate as needed. Often we have habits of holding tension in these areas that gets in our way. Sometimes its an amount that we’re aware of, and for other people it may be more subtle, so you might not even realise you’re holding your stomach (for example). This month’s short free audio offers a little help on that!

In this month’s lessons, we’ll be looking at how we can better harness the pelvis for freer movement of the whole body. Our second focus will be on how to learn to feel the pelvis moving in space. So you can use the head and pelvis together to get up and down from the floor or chair more easily.
